Eija Bergroth
I graduated from medical school in Kuopio University in 2004 and specialized in pediatrics in 2010. Currently, I am working at the Central Hospital of Central Finland in Jyväskylä. My thesis work concerns viral infections and breathing difficulties with small children, with special interest in risk factors and etiology behind these infections. In my first article, we studied the effect of dog and cat contacts on the frequency of respiratory infections and infectious symptoms during the first year of life.
Workshop-dragare
- Dog assisted intervention in education
My name is Päivi Latvala-Sillman. I work as a special educational needs teacher in Helsinki. I teach pupils with autism spectrum. In my classroom I have working with me my trained 5 year-old dog. My elderly dog has retired from this work and I now have a puppy growing up, to be trained in this work.
My name is Nona Borgström. I have been working for 10 years as a vocational teacher with animals and students. I have also been working with assistance dog projects. For several years I have been working with dog assisted interventions in classrooms and goal directed animal assisted interventions for children.
Bachelor degree in Agriculture, Veterinary Technician, Vocational teacher, Student in Bachelor of Social Services (2012-)
My name is Nina Borgström, B.Sc. Pedagogy. In 1999 I started working as a kindergarten teacher, and ten years later academic studies at Åbo Akademi University. In my bachelor work, I have focused on how the dog assisted pedagogy method can promote children’s learning from a pedagogical and didactic perspective. The purpose of my master´s thesis is to see how the animals affect human behaviour in a learning environment. Studying individuals from an interpersonal perspective gives a view of how animal-assisted methods can promote children’s development and learning. After all this years, I have gained an extensive practical and theoretical knowledge of child development and learning.
- Dog assisted intervention in adult neurology and geriatrics
Paula Leppänen, senior physiotherapist at Käpylä Rehabilitation centre in Helsinki. I am working mainly with patients who have spinal cord or brain injury. I have applied dog assisted physiotherapy to my daily work since 2002. Dog assisted physiotherapy has been most useful with brain injury or incomplete spinal cord injury patients. Nowadays therapy sessions are executed with a multiprofessional team, including speech therapist, occupational therapist and psychologist. The written and verbal feedback from patients has been very positive.
My name is Maria Maljanen and I am a physiotherapist specialized in psychophysical physiotherapy. I have experience working with elderly clients, individuals with disabilities and terminally ill patients. At the moment, I am working in hospice care and in a private physiotherapy company called Bodymind. I have a trained Australian Shepherd, who I utilize in my work with the elderly.
- Dog assisted intervention in psychiatric rehabilitation
My name is Heidi Kihlström-Lehtonen. I am an occupational therapist and I have also studied Health Sciences in Jyväskylä University. I am currently working as a lecturer at Jamk University of Applied sciences. I teach Occupational therapy (OT) students. Our 3 years old middle size poodle called Lysti has been working with me in my previous work at psychiatric hospital for adults.
I am Maria Heikkinen. I am an experienced Occupational Therapist in providing services to Psychiatric patients. Because of my interest in dogs and their relationship to humans, I give a dog assisted therapy. I have been working for 3 years with dogs in mental health OT.
